Congratulations to Dr. Jeffrey Weitz for being appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada!
Dr. Jeffrey Weitz was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada. Dr. Weitz is a Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences and Executive Director of the Thrombosis and Atherosclerosis Research Institute.
“For his outstanding contributions to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of clotting disorders, and for his leadership in the fields of thrombosis and hemostasis.”
As a clinician-scientist, Dr. Weitz has focused on the basic mechanisms by which anticoagulants (blood thinners) and thrombolytic agents (clot busters) work in the body.
Dr. Weitz has focused his research on clinically important questions and has successfully translated findings at the bench into new treatments for patients. “Understanding how things work at the protein and cellular level has helped me to identify new strategies to treat patients. This is why fundamental research is so important for new drug development’”, says Weitz.
Dr. Weitz holds the Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Thrombosis and the Heart and Stroke Foundation J.F. Mustard Chair in Cardiovascular Research at McMaster University.
