Congratulations to Erblin Cani (Liaw Lab), who received a two-year PhD studentship ($50K total) from the Canadian Network of COVID-19 Clinical Trials Network!!
Strategies to enhance biosampling-based translational research in Canada
Why is this research important?
A valuable component of “bench-to-bedside” research (also known as translational research) is the collection and study of high-quality biological samples (such as blood, tissues) from patients. Biosamples are essential to study biological pathways, to identify disease-related biomarkers for diagnosis or prognosis, and to identify new therapeutic interventions. However, the requirements for biosample collection, processing, and storage may hinder the ability of research groups to engage in translational research projects. This may be especially difficult for community-based hospitals, which often lack the necessary infrastructure and personnel to conduct biosample-based studies.
How will you use this funding?
Funding from the PhD studentship is being used for the following objectives: (1) to conduct a survey to identify the barriers to participation in biosample-based translational research in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting in Canada, (2) to support translational research at academic and community hospitals, and (3) to investigate why ICU patients are at an increased risk of developing life-threatening blood clots.
How will your research advance the field?
Our lab-based studies will provide new mechanistic insights into infection-induced immunothrombosis, a process in which the body’s immune system contributes to the formation of harmful blood clots. In addition, our recently completed survey found that although Canadian researchers are interested in participating in biosample-based research in the ICU setting, significant barriers exist including insufficient funding, time, and research personnel. To increase research participation, we are working on strategies to increase mentorship, training, funding, and access to laboratory facilities. Our study highlights the importance of developing research models that can sustain current and new research groups, particularly those from community ICU sites.
